A photograph showing three doctors from different ethnic backgrounds attending to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has captured the attention of Malaysians online, with many seeing the image as a poignant reflection of the country’s multiracial society.
The photograph, highlighted by Public Health Malaysia (PHM) on Facebook, shows three medical personnel from the three major races in Malaysia, a Malay, Chinese and Indian, standing close to Dr Mahathir as they carried out their duties to monitor his condition.
The image emerged at an especially emotional time for the 101-year-old former prime minister, who was mourning the death of his wife of seven decades, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.
Against that sombre backdrop, the presence of the three doctors attracted considerable attention.
The three doctors appeared almost as though they were representing Malaysians as a whole, standing beside Dr Mahathir at a moment when concern over his wellbeing was shared by people across the country.
The post also drew attention to the doctors’ attention to hygiene, including sanitising their hands while caring for the former prime minister.
The photo has since triggered widespread discussions online, especially on threads, and the comments are interesting.
“Powerful image,” said mahfuzah_nuqman.
“Actually, there are 4 doctors, namely Tun Dr Mahathir. Tun is indeed a real doctor,” added salihin95.
Another netizen said their selection was not coincidental.
Netizen nizzam193 further pointed out that the many races in Malaysia actually lived in harmony if not because of the political parties that divide and conquer.
But here comes rempokremo, wondering why the Indian lady was forced to wear a hijab.
Then there was fatinnordin18, stating that there was only a malay doctor, and the chinese man was in fact a physiotherapist. Also, she said Mahathir had two nurses, a Malay and an Indian.
A photograph may not settle every argument about race, identity or politics, but perhaps that is precisely why this one resonated with so many people.
Whatever their roles may have been, the people in the room were there for the same reason, that is to care for a fellow human being.
In a country as diverse as Malaysia, that simple act can sometimes say more about living together than any grand speech ever could.—Sept 29, 2026
