THE phrase ‘a guest in one’s own house’ means to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or lacking control and authority in a place where you should naturally feel completely at home.

This was the scenario presented by Threader 🦋𝓕𝓪𝓲𝓽𝓱 𝓛𝓲𝓶🦋 (@faith.butterfly04) when she groused about being discriminated against by her own brethren for not being able to converse in Cantonese.

The self-confessed K-pop addict reserved her umbrage for Ipoh residents who assumed that she is a Mainlander due to her inability to speak Cantonese.

Adding the Malay phrase “siapa makan cili, dia rasa pedas” (literally, “those who feel the heat are those who consumed the chilies”), the irate poster took a swipe at those who have knowingly made life less-than-pleasant for this non-Cantonese speaker.

Commenters were keen to share similar experiences with one recounting how his grandmother was “scolded” for using Malay to converse with her husband.

Her retort in “perfect Cantonese” that it was “because this is Malaysia, not China” presumably did not go down well with the loudmouth shopkeeper.

An amateur observer of local behaviour claimed that a lot of Malaysian Chinese are “racist even against their own kind, not just against the Malays”.

Another Chinese commenter could not resist just dropping a bombshell remark claiming the “Chinese people are the most racist people in the world” regardless if they are Mainlanders or otherwise.

A more light-hearted suggestion came by way of @ed.teo who provided a guide on how to pretend one knew Cantonese via a liberal sprinkling of general ‘Manglish’ phrases.

The poster professed she already applied this tactic expertly but her bone of contention was the speed in which they come to a judgement that she must be from China.

There was also the accusation that the Cantonese were overbearing and discriminate against other dialects.

This linguistic domination by Cantonese-speakers in Ipoh was confirmed by a resident who is not best pleased at having a dialect forced upon her. However, she admits to understanding most of the time though she is not Cantonese.

One expert observer of Chinese behaviour backed up this claim when it was argued that a similar situation can be expected in Penang if a Chinese is not conversant in Hokkien or Heng Hua in the case of Sarawak capital, Kuching.

However, this led to one perplexed citizen asking why hasn’t the poster mastered Cantonese if she wishes to live in Ipoh? It is the city’s lingua franca. Wouldn’t it be weird if a resident of Hong Kong claimed the same?

This sentiment was echoed by this Hokkien-speaker who rightly argues that being able to speak the local lingo will help a person blend into the community. He added that he is able to converse comfortably in Cantonese while in Ipoh.

At the end of the day, it was surmised that the poster was perhaps being a tad too sensitive and should learn to take things in her stride.

Different people spoke different tongues the whole over which is part and parcel of life. This commenter advised that there was no need to insult Ipoh folk who had been there decades earlier. “Don’t expect the world to change for you only” was the parting advice. – Oct 8, 2026
