Print and Cut solutions are making small-scale production more accessible and flexible, helping creative entrepreneurs turn original ideas into commercial opportunities.

By Sandy Lee, Head of Personal System Devices Division at Canon Marketing Malaysia

Creativity has evolved beyond a form of expression and identity to become an economic opportunity for many Malaysians. From design, arts and crafts to personalised creations and merchandise, a new generation of creators is finding ways to turn their skills and ideas into commercial ventures.

The growing economic significance of the sector is reflected in Malaysia’s cultural and creative industry, which contributed 6.8% to the nation’s GDP in 2024, generating RM130.7 billion in gross value added and recording 7.1% growth from the previous year, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Within the industry’s core domain, books and press accounted for 9.5% while visual arts and crafts contributed 6.6% of gross value added, highlighting the economic value generated by creative activities.

As more Malaysians explore creative entrepreneurship, accessible tools and production solutions could play an increasingly important role in helping them bring their ideas to market.

From Passion to Business

For emerging creators looking to commercialise original designs, personalised gifts, merchandise or craft products, turning an idea into a finished product is not always straightforward.

Customisation gives creators greater freedom to experiment and develop distinctive offerings, but production can present practical challenges. Outsourcing, for example, may be less suitable for small businesses that need limited quantities to test new ideas, experiment with designs or fulfil customised orders.

Managing production costs and turnaround times while maintaining quality, consistency and creative freedom can therefore become a barrier to growth.

For small-scale creative businesses, the ability to produce efficiently at a scale that matches demand can provide greater flexibility. It also allows entrepreneurs to respond more quickly to changing customer requirements while continuing to experiment with new products and designs.

Making Small-Scale Production More Accessible

Print and Cut solutions offer one way of addressing these challenges by making small-scale production more accessible, flexible and commercially viable.

The process allows creators to develop their own designs, print them according to their intended application and cut them into the desired shapes. This creates greater opportunities for customisation without requiring large production runs.

Recognising this potential, Canon Malaysia has partnered with Siser Asia to combine their respective expertise in printing and cutting technology.

The partnership brings together Canon’s GX business printer, which features a full pigment ink system designed to produce vibrant, water-resistant prints, with the Siser Juliet Cutter’s high-definition cutting capabilities.

Together, the technologies are designed to provide durability, accuracy and consistency across small-scale projects, giving creative entrepreneurs greater control over the production process.

From Custom Stickers to Personalised Merchandise

The applications of Print and Cut technology extend across a range of creative businesses and projects.

Entrepreneurs can use the solution for personalised merchandise, customised stickers and labels, apparel, craft projects and other small-batch creations. The flexibility of producing in smaller quantities also gives creators more room to test concepts and develop distinctive product offerings.

For businesses built around personalisation, this can help reduce the constraints associated with traditional production methods while allowing entrepreneurs to respond to individual customer requirements.

More importantly, greater control over printing and cutting can give creators the freedom to experiment with different designs and product ideas before committing to larger production volumes.

Supporting Malaysia’s Creative Entrepreneurship Ecosystem

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its cultural and creative economy, the growth of creative entrepreneurship presents an opportunity to broaden participation in the sector and develop a stronger pipeline of homegrown creative businesses.

DOSM’s latest data shows that the cultural and creative industry employed 763,100 people in 2024, accounting for 4.7% of Malaysia’s total employment.

Sustaining this momentum will require an ecosystem that encourages innovation, capability building and collaboration as new commercial opportunities emerge.

For Canon Malaysia, supporting this development reflects its corporate philosophy of “Kyosei”, which centres on living and working together for the common good and highlights the role businesses can play in supporting the communities and industries they serve.

Through continued print innovation and industry partnerships, Canon Malaysia aims to empower more creative entrepreneurs to pursue their passions and turn creativity into commercial opportunities, contributing to the continued growth of Malaysia’s creative sector.
