New award categories spotlight innovation, digital transformation and SME excellence in Malaysia
The SME Association of Malaysia celebrated its 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner while officially launching the Platinum Business Awards 2026, bringing together entrepreneurs, policymakers and industry leaders from across the country.
Held in Kuala Lumpur, the event highlighted the association’s long-standing role in supporting Malaysia’s SME ecosystem while outlining future priorities focused on innovation, sustainability and business growth.
Platinum Business Awards 2026 Opens New Opportunities for SMEs
The Platinum Business Awards 2026 will officially open for nominations on 1 June 2026. This year’s edition places stronger emphasis on digital transformation, governance and business intelligence.
Additionally, the awards introduced two new categories:
- SME Food and Beverages Excellence Award
- SME Manufacturing Excellence Award
These additions reflect the growing contribution of both sectors to Malaysia’s economy and SME development landscape.
Strengthening Malaysia’s SME Ecosystem
Since its establishment in 1995, the SME Association of Malaysia has supported entrepreneurs through advocacy, networking, training programmes and international collaboration.
Malaysia’s Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Steven Sim Chee Keong, said SMEs continue to play a vital role in Malaysia’s economic growth by contributing significantly to employment and GDP development.
He added that the government remains committed to helping SMEs strengthen competitiveness and long-term resilience through various support initiatives and policies.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chin Chee Seong, National President of the SME Association of Malaysia, described the anniversary as an important milestone for the organisation.
“Since its inception, the Association has been committed to empowering entrepreneurs, bringing together representatives from various industries to form a strong network of collaboration. Through policy advocacy, training, and international exchanges, we have assisted businesses in standing out in a competitive market and showcased the strength and potential of Malaysian SMEs,” he said.
He also encouraged SMEs to continue embracing innovation, sustainability and global expansion opportunities.
Industry Leaders Highlight Future SME Growth
Dato Sri Ricky Yaw Chan Choy, National Deputy President of the SME Association of Malaysia, said the celebration reflected both the resilience and achievements of SMEs over the past three decades.
“Let us move forward with courage and confidence, continuing to innovate, collaborate, and build a stronger, more competitive SME ecosystem,” he said.
During the event, Datuk Wira Richard Lau Chi Chiang, Organising Chairman of the Platinum Business Awards 2026, officially launched the awards.
He explained that the awards aim to recognise businesses demonstrating excellence in innovation, corporate management, market expansion and social responsibility.
Furthermore, he announced plans for the SME PBA Roadshow, which will connect Malaysian SMEs with international business leaders, policymakers and investors to encourage regional collaboration and market expansion.
SME Association Looks Ahead to Digitalisation and Sustainability
Looking ahead, the SME Association of Malaysia said it will continue helping SMEs navigate digital transformation, sustainability practices and internationalisation efforts.
The gala dinner was attended by several prominent leaders and representatives, including Selangor State Assembly Speaker Lau Weng San and Cheras Member of Parliament Tan Kok Wai.
As Malaysia’s SME sector continues evolving, initiatives such as the Platinum Business Awards 2026 are expected to encourage greater innovation, competitiveness and long-term business growth.
