GARISH neon signs welcoming revellers 24/7 are part and parcel of many cities’ nightlife. But why isn’t there halal alternatives to attract the Muslim clientele?

This was the query made by Threader @sxintridd who suggested that entertainment centres offering “Wayang Kulit, Mek Mulung, Zapin, Dondang Sayang” be set up to cater to a Malay clientele or at the very least showcase Malay culture within the Federal capital.

He went on to suggest that this place be named “Pekan Melayu” which would serve traditional Malay desserts, rent Malay clothing and even have Jawi signboards and operate 24/7.

Acknowledging that Malays did not frequent bars or subscribe to a nightlife lifestyle like the Chinese do, an alternative of “Dondang, Joget, Zapin” was suggested.

Given that the images were from establishments in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown which has Jalan Melayu as a neighbouring stretch, efforts can be undertaken to highlight the country’s diversity.

Not a viable idea, mate!

The poster acknowledged that he was envious that those places in Chinatown and Little India are so famous and alive. Why aren’t there similar places to showcase “Malayness” in KL?

The enthusiastic poster also stressed that what he was proposing was not a Kompleks Kraf-type establishment but a hip, happening and trendy place for youths to hang out.

His post was strangely accompanied by a re-post of images of karaoke centres with gaudy neon signs (in Chinese, perhaps subtly making a point about signboard rule breaking) by fellow Threader Hilman Taufiqi (@hilmantaufiqi_)

One entrepreneurial-minded commenter asked why were the Malays themselves busy opening cafes that promoted foreign fare?

Worse yet, the Malays will then take issue with other races for promoting their own cultures.

A Malay observer pointedly remarked that there was nothing stopping Malay entrepreneurs from pursuing such avenues in an open market economy.

He highlighted the prickly issue that the Malays seems allergic to their own culture, which seems to be holding back such entrepreneurial dreams.

The lack of Malay investors was cited as a major stumbling block while another commenter highlighted the lack of demand for spaces to celebrate the Malay culture.

Some “experts” on Malay behaviour were of the opinion that the community simply did not indulge in late night activities as other ethnic groups.

Moreover, it was NOT necessary to drag down the traditional Malay arts to the level of noisy discotheques with garish neon lights.

A rather blunt commenter further highlighted that the idea focused on social, art and culture, making it more a philanthropy project rather than a commercial one that is looking for a return on investment.

Echoing this sentiment was a business-savvy commenter who noted that the establishments highlighted in the post were selling a lifestyle of leisure where people go to hangout, not indulge in any sort of cultural activities.

Were people willing to spend hours and hundreds of ringgit just to watch Wayang Kulit? Few things to note about this post.

Firstly, the poster seems somewhat confused and unclear of the concept. The images posted were NOT establishments promoting, exhibiting and celebrating Chinese culture.

They were pubs and karaoke centres albeit with Chinese neon signs. How he confused the two is open to conjecture.

Secondly, as rightly pointed out, where is the ROI for this novel idea? Is there a demand for such outlets celebrating Malay culture. Will people pay cold hard cash for the experience?

At the end of the day, it is again a question of identity politics ever so subtly rearing its head.

This post is just continuing the trend of highlighting how Malay identity is being drowned out by loud, garish neon lights of a foreign culture.

It is just more of the same rightist shtick disguised as entrepreneurial enquiry. –Oct 4, 2026
