HSBC’s Global Affluent Investor Snapshot 2026 reveals that affluent and high net worth Malaysians are reducing cash holdings, increasing investments in gold and alternative assets, and focusing on building wealth to combat inflation and prepare for retirement.

Affluent and high net worth investors in Malaysia are adopting a long-term investment approach as they seek to protect their wealth against inflation while preparing for retirement, according to the latest HSBC Global Affluent Investor Snapshot 2026.

The HSBC-commissioned survey, which gathered responses from nearly 10,000 affluent and high net worth individuals across 10 markets, found that Malaysian investors are embracing a “future-proofing” mindset by balancing wealth preservation with growth opportunities.

Unlike a purely risk-on or risk-off strategy, investors are building portfolios that allow them to respond to changing market conditions while protecting their financial progress.

Inflation and Retirement Drive Investment Decisions

The survey found that the top financial priority among affluent and high net worth Malaysians is building additional wealth to offset inflation, cited by 43% of respondents.

Meanwhile, 42% said preserving and protecting their wealth was a key objective, while another 42% identified retirement planning as one of their primary financial goals.

These findings suggest investors are placing greater emphasis on strengthening long-term financial resilience amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

Malaysian Investors Reduce Cash Holdings

To achieve these goals, affluent investors in Malaysia are taking a more proactive approach to portfolio allocation than many of their global counterparts.

Over the next 12 months, 16% of Malaysian respondents plan to reduce their cash holdings, exceeding the global average of 12%. The figure is also higher than those recorded in Singapore (13%) and Taiwan (9%), indicating a stronger willingness among Malaysian investors to deploy idle cash into investment opportunities.

According to Linda Yip, Country Head of International Wealth and Premier Banking at HSBC Malaysia, the findings mirror the investment behaviour of the bank’s Premier and Premier Elite customers.

She said affluent and high net worth individuals are actively rebalancing their portfolios to achieve long-term financial goals while responding to inflationary pressures and the need to build retirement savings.

Gold, Insurance and Stocks Remain Core Holdings

The survey found that insurance (48%), stocks (44%) and gold (43%) are currently the three most widely held financial products among affluent and high net worth investors in Malaysia.

Looking ahead, respondents indicated the strongest increase in interest would be in:

  • Gold (+20 percentage points)
  • Fixed or term deposits (+19 percentage points)
  • Alternative investments (+17 percentage points)

The findings suggest investors continue to value traditional wealth preservation assets while gradually diversifying their portfolios with alternative investment options.

Growing Focus on Long-Term Wealth Planning

Yip noted that affluent investors are becoming increasingly deliberate in selecting financial products based on their long-term objectives.

While traditional investments such as insurance and equities remain the foundation of many portfolios, investors are also incorporating assets such as gold, fixed deposits and alternative investments to strengthen portfolio diversification.

She added that HSBC continues to support clients through a broad range of wealth management solutions and dedicated relationship managers, helping customers make informed financial decisions across different life stages.

According to the survey, Malaysia’s affluent and high net worth investors are increasingly positioning their portfolios to balance growth opportunities with wealth preservation, reflecting a broader focus on financial resilience in an evolving economic environment.
